NIDA recognizes that this is the era of globalization and one of its major commitments is to implement international studies programs.

NIDA thus encourages its Schools/Centers to offer international studies programs and English programs and seeks to have foreign students in its master's and doctoral programs. NIDA also encourages the development of an international dimension in the teaching, research, and service of its faculty through exchange programs with institutes of higher learning abroad.

Thailand University : Srinakharinwirot University

Prasarnmit Campus

Like other parts of present Bangkok (Krungthep), what is now the main campus of Srinakharinwirot University, was, 220 years ago, part of a swampy, monsoonal floodplain fed by the Chaophraya River.  Since then, many industrial and technological developments have contributed to the growth and development of its
present site. And, it is on this site that a fine bronze statue of its founder, Dr. Saroj Buasri, nourished our first educators in 1949. Conditions were far from modern and the University was still surrounded by much tropical riverine and canal (khlong) vegetation, aquatic animals and a largely, boat-bound but not-dense, ethnically diverse human population.

In 1949, the University became a reality when the Higher Teacher Training School at Prasarnmit was established. There was then an urgent need for degree-level training for the teaching profession.  Prasarnmit was the first of its kind in the country’s history of teacher training.  In 1953, it became the College of Education having authority to grant a Bachelor’s degree in Education. Subsequently, more programs at both the Bachelor and Master levels were developed.  In 1974, the College of Education became a comprehensive university by Royal Decree of His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej who graciously named the new university Srinakharinwirot (Si-na-ka-rin-wi-rot), which means ‘the glory of the city.’  Today, situated in the center of Bangkok, the University maintains thirteen faculties, seven research institutes, seven centers, the Graduate School and Demonstration Schools.  However, the University’s broad vision of its role in education did not extend to the early acquisition of large building sites in the rapidly developing central Bangkok area.  As a result, some of the newer Faculties were later relocated to a new campus.

Ongkharak Campus

By 1996, the University’s rapid growth had exceeded the original campus’ capacity.  To address the overcrowding, the University expanded its facilities to Ongkharak District, in Nakhon Nayok Province, which is about 70 kilometers from Bangkok.  The first faculty on this new campus was the Faculty of Engineering that admitted its first engineering students in 1996.  Faculties in various fields of Medicine and Technology are currently located at the Ongkharak campus.

 

The Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Medical Center was established at the Ongkharak campus to provide the University’s medical students with modern facilities for research and training and from which medical care is provided for students, staff and the general public.  Throughout its history of rapid growth, and its modernizing and technological developments, Srinakharinwirot University has maintained its strong reputation in the field of education and a commitment to academic excellence.

Thailand University : Mahidol University

Founded in 1943 as the University of Medical Sciences, Mahidol University has its origins in the first medical school in Thailand, established at Siriraj Hospital in 1890 by H.M. King Chulalongkorn. In 1969, having gained renown in the fields of medicine, public health and the sciences, the University was renamed with great honor by H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej after his own father, H.R.H. Prince Mahidol of Songkla, who is widely acknowledged to be the 'Father of Modern Medicine and Public Health in Thailand'.

Thailand University : Kasetsart University

History of the University
Kasetsart University is a public university in Thailand among the present 28 public universities, 41 rajabhat institutes, 9 rajamangala institutes of technology and 61 private universities and colleges in the country, it was the very first to offer post-secondary educational programs in agriculture.

Kasetsart University emerged initially in 1938 at Maejo Village in Chiang Mai as a unit of division rank of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture with the name of Kasetsart College, literally meaning College of Agricultural Science. Its primary responsibility was offering three-year post-secondary educational programs in response to the personnel requirements of the Ministry of Agriculture. In 1939, it was transferred to the present location at the Bangkhen district in Bangkok, and the School of Forestry in Phrae Province was placed under its jurisdiction. The college offered post-secondary education programs in agriculture, cooperative science and forestry.

On February 2, 1943, by virtue of the Kasetsart University Act B.E. 2486, the Division of Kasetsart College was detached from Department of Agriculture and Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture and transformed into a unit equivalent to a department of the ministry with the name Kasetsart University (KU). The Faculty of Agriculture, the Faculty of Forestry, the Faculty of Cooperative Science, and the Faculty of Fisheries were its primary structural units, and the University was authorized to offer post-secondary educational programs in crop production and animal husbandry, forestry, fisheries and cooperative science. Hence, February 2, 1943, it has been officially designated as the foundation day of Kasetsart University.

Kasetsart University has grown steadily and accomplished much through the years. it has become a comprehensive university highly regarded nationally and internationally. Kesetsart University has 7 campuses as follows : Bangkhen, Kamphaeng Saen, Si Racha, Chalermphrakiat Sakon Nakhon Province, Suphanburi, Lopburi and Krabi. Moreover, the university maintains all together 17 research stations and 4 field stations in all regions of the country. The university will celebrate its 70th anniversary in academic year 2013.

Thailand University : Chulalongkorn University

Chulalongkorn University, Thailand's first institution of higher learning, officially came into being in March, 1917. The groundwork and preparation for it in terms of planning and development, however, took place more than a century ago. The worldwide economic, social and political changes in the late nineteenth century contributed to Siam's decision to adapt herself in order to avoid being colonized by the Western powers (“Siam” became “Thailand” in the year 1939). Thus King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) has royal policy to strengthen and improve government so that the country could successfully resist the tide of colonialism. One of the major parts of the policy, which would later prove to be deep-rooted and highly effective, was to improve the Siamese educational system so as to produce capable personnel to work in both the public and private sectors. As a result, a school was founded in 1871 at the Royal Pages Barrack within the Grand Palace compound.
